You are worthless.

The man walked silently down the road, ignoring the odd looks he got. He was not a normal looking man, to say the least, and the sword that he had resting on his shoulders was far stranger. It actually looked a little evil. Even felt like it, to anyone who got close enough. It WAS evil, after all.

I'm telling you, boy, you should just give up. You started this journey of yours twenty-two years ago. It's never going to end, you know that. THEY knew it when they sent you out with me. They knew you'd end up like this.

He was trying to ignore that voice in his head as well. He was also trying very hard to stay on his feet, though he looked fine on the outside. Because of his blood, the blood of his father, he was immune to the mental side of the blades curse, but not the physical. His body was in agonizing pain, and it would continue to be so until he released the blade.

You are a fool. Every passing day, you draw closer to death. Just release the blade. Do that, and you will not be fated to die.

He gritted his teeth, the pain starting to become unbearable. What was he to do? He swore an oath to his village that he would find a way to destroy the sword, and that was what he intended to do. He would never break his word. He would never cause harm to others needlessly. He would not betray a person's trust. He would not be his father.

Stupid boy! That village wants you dead, and that's why they sent you on this stupid quest of yours. They wanted a convenient way of getting rid of the both of us!

He was moving more slowly now, staggering along. People were giving him a wide berth, not wanting to get close. Was he sick? Drunk? They didn't care. He was wierd, and staggering down the street. One single person asked if he was okay. The man didn't answer. Partly because he didn't hear them. Partly because he didn't care whether he lived or died. Mostly because he couldn't speak. He never could when he was touching the sword.

Your stupidity is only outweighed by your stubborness. Release the damned sword! What do you care if I go and wreak havoc somewhere? It's not like it will affect you. Heh, besides, shouldn't one listen to their father?

YOU ARE NOT MY FATHER!

The man tensed, and unleashed a surge of electricity, charging it through the sword. Both man and sword crackled with electricity, the man's eyes glowing white, teeth clenched. That alone scared people away. But far more frightening, was the scream of rage and agony that was coming, not from the man, but from the sword. The electricity finally dispersed, leaving the man breathing hard, swaying on his feet.

Fine....I'll shut up........for now...

The man sank to his knees there in the road, driving the sword into the ground, using it as a prop to hold himself up. What should he do? He couldn't very well sit in the middle of the road with a cursed sword. But he couldn't stand, and he was fast losing conciousness. He weakly brought his thumb to his mouth, and bit the pad of the digit just enough to draw blood. He then quickly drew an intricate seal along the blade of the sword, made a few quick hand signs, and muttered a few unintelligible words.

The seal glowed for a minute, before fading. The seal wouldn't last long, but it would prevent the sword from harming anyone who touched it, at least for awhile. He then focused a bit of electricity into his hand on the hilt, ensuring it couldn't be pried from him. Satisfied with his precautions, he finally stopped fighting. His eyes rolled back, and he collapsed into the dirt, his world going dark.

( Female character please. Someone kind, preferably, but assertive and stubborn. Someone, for example, that would not let him leave till they were sure he was perfectly okay. And by assertive, I mean someone to counteract his shyness, but won't scare him off. If you have any questions, let me know. This is set in another world, sort of. Magic and the super natural are not uncommon, and there are no cars or planes and such. No modern conveniences. There are cities, but not many, and everything has a kind of medieval feel to it.)

A Reason To Live
Riiko Kitamura

Rii walked through the crowd, wondering about what's happening.
There in the middle of a huge circle, she saw a man, lying down in the middle of
the street, unconscious.

Hello?! Isn't anyone going to help him?
Rii thought, annoyed that everyone these days are so inconsiderate.

She walked towards the man,
despite the warnings that the people in the village were telling her.
She finally sat by him, taking his pulse by placing her fingers by the
artery on his neck.

badump
badump
badump

Oh! Good! He's still alive!
Rii's face lightened up. This man still has a chance to recover.
She took a scroll out from the back of her pocket and glanced at it before
letting out a squeel of glee.
She then formed hand seals and mumbled
"Elements, lend me your power" along with other words
that sounded like gibberish.

Wind and leaves surrounded them, making it look like they're
in the eye of a tornado.
She heard people gasps in a mixture of amazement and freight.
Within minutes they disappeared and reappeared in a small cabin
around the outskirts of the town they were just in.

She placed the man on her bed, elevating his head and his feet from the
rest of his body, but didn't once try to pry the sword off his hands.

"There!" She smiled and walked to what looks sort of like a kitchen and
grabbed a towel and soaked it in water.
She then returned to the bedroom and cleaned his face with the damp
towel. The man was covered in dirt and she couldn't stand seeing anyone
so dirty.

"I wonder why you're so exhausted..." her voice was soft and caring.
Rii grew up alone, but she never failed to be nice towards others.
She wanted to treat others the same way she wanted them to treat her,
so even to strange people, such as this man, she was caring.

After a few hours of watching over him, Rii fell asleep,
her head lying on the bed, and the rest of her sitting
on the ground next to him.

When he finally woke up, he wasn't really sure what to make of things. His whole body hurt, but not like it usually did. It was more like a dull ache instead of mind numbing pain. That told him that the seal was still active on the sword, since he could still feel it in his grasp. He groaned a bit, reaching up with his free hand to run a hand through his hair. He had a headache as well, which always was annoying. That was usually the only part of his body that DIDN'T hurt. He must have hit his head or something.

And then he took note of his surroundings. This was most certainly not what he expected. He expected to still by lying in the dirt or something. Lying on a rather soft bed inside what appeared to be a cabin was the opposite. He tried to sit up, but winced a bit, and stopped bothering. It appeared he needed more rest first. He brought the sword up so he could check the seal, and sighed, rather relieved. It had not corroded at all yet. He had a good deal of time. He was thankful for that.

And then he noticed Rii. He was rather startled, not expecting to see a young woman sleeping with her head resting on the edge of the bed. 'So she's the one who found me, I suppose...I should thank her for taking care of me. I'll wait though, don't want to wake her.' He looked at her for a few moments, and couldn't help but smile a bit. She had a sweet, gentle aura about her, and was quite beautiful. That made him laugh a bit. 'She fits the description of an angel perfectly, aside from wings...'

This, for some reason, made him think of something that made him feel a bit depressed. If he didn't have to travel around with this damned sword, which he refused to refer to, even in thought, as his father, what would life be like? Certainly better than it had been. Maybe he'd, by now, have met a nice young woman and gotten married. He sighed a bit at the thought, shaking his head. 'No reason to make myself depressed, thinking about what could have been.'

A Reason To Live
Riiko Kitamura

Rii felt the bed shake a little while he was moving around.
She mumbled in her sleep, but didn't wake up.

When she finally felt like someone was looking at her, she opened her eyes and sat up
instantaneously. She saw the man, lying on the bed, but in a different position. His eyes were
closed but he looked sad.

"Aww.. I hope you're not having a nightmare." her voice was silky as she said those words.
Hmm.. I should make something for you to eat when you wake up... I think I have enough to
make some porridge and tea.

Rii thought to herself, but she didn't want to have to wake him up with all
the ruckus that she might make in the "kitchen".

"Hmm.. I'll just try to be as quiet as possible." Rii smiled.
She haven't really had a guest in a while and it's been a week since she went to the market
to buy some ingredients for food.
Hopefully, the porridge would do fine for him.

Rii stood up, and tried to take the damp towel that was lying on the floor, but ended up
tripping on a roll of string that she left on the floor earlier that day and didn't bother to pick up.

Thud

"Oww..." Rii quickly clasped her hands over her mouth when she realized how much
noise she made and looked back at the man on the bed.

Uh oh... did I wake him up?!

He heard her voice when she spoke, but didn't respond. Natural curiousity led him to want to see what she'd do. 'Her voice is just as beautiful as she is. Unexpected. I have a feeling I'll really miss her when I leave...' He only opened his eyes when he heard her moving away, but blinked when she suddenly fell. He lifted his head a bit, meeting her eyes when she looked up at him. 'Wow...such a rich gold color to her eyes...mine must be rather creepy...not many people have coal black eyes, after all.'

"Are you okay, miss? You're not hurt, are you?" Pretty odd, coming from the person lying on a bed after having been found unconcious in the street, but that's just how he was. His voice was a bit strained due to being in pain, yet it was very soft, and kind. He had a kind face as well, when it wasn't obscured by dirt, which she had conveniently washed from his face earlier, though he wasn't aware of that yet.

"Oh! I-I'm fine!" Rii smiled nervously and stood up.
"How about you? How are you feeling? I hope you don't mind, I sort of cleaned you up a bit.
Your face was covered with dirt and I figured you wouldn't want to be that dirty when you wake up.
It must be uncomfortable having to wake up with your face caked with dirt."
A glint of worry flashed by her eyes.

He doesn't look so well..
Rii thought to herself.

He looks really handsome though, well.. without all the dirt all over his face.
The man looked fragile, yet he looked strong. The look on his eyes made Rii's face turn red.
When she felt her face warm up she quickly looked away.

He noticed her reaction, but wasn't sure of the cause. He quirked an eyebrow, his head cocking to the side a bit. "I'm alright, I guess. Nothing I'm not used to. I actually feel a bit better than usual. Normally when I collapse like that, I wake up lying on the ground still. It's a nice change to wake up in a bed...and to find out someone was actually attempting to make me feel better." He laughed a little at that, though winced at the action.

He managed to force himself to sit up this time, and propped himself up, sighing. "Thank you for that, by the way. Oh, and my name is Rayard Hadrian, though...I suppose you could call me Ray, if you like. Shorter, and I sort of prefer it." He then looked around some more, before turning his eyes back to her. "Um...where am I, Miss.....?"

A Reason To Live
Riiko Kitamura

Rii looked back at him.
"Oh! I'm so sorry! I completely forgot my manners!
My name is Riiko Kitamura! It's very nice to meet you, Ray!"
She smiled at him and continued
"You collapsed on the ground and I couldn't possibly leave you out in the
middle of the street like that! So I took you here at my cabin.
We're in the outskirts of the town, I hope you don't mind..
It's not much, but it's home for me" She smiled again,
a bit of a nervous smile this time.

"Would you care for a bowl of porridge? I was just about to cook some
cause it looks like you haven't eaten anything in a while, and well..."
Her stomach gave a low growl.
She laughed and blushed, a bit embarrassed.

"Oh! And I'm really glad to hear that you're doing better than usual!
Must be hard traveling on your own like that. ...Or at least I think that's
what you were doing. Heehee! You just didn't look like you're from around here, or
any of the surrounding villages."

He just looked at her for a moment, seeming a bit startled. "You...are a very energetic young woman, I see...unexpected. Anyway, thank you for helping me. And as for food, whatever is fine, I don't mind either way. But you seem hungry yourself, so you should eat first. I can wait." He started to stretch out his arms a bit, and hesitantly set the sword down so he wasn't waving it around. He was trying to work through the pain, and his tensed and sore muscles.

He was stretching his back as well, wincing the whole time, while looking around, though he gave Riiko a soft smile everytime he looked in her direction. No reason not to give her a smile, when she was helping him out as she was.

A Reason To Live
Riiko Kitamura

Rii's face brightened up when she saw him smile.

wow.. he really is handsome...

"All right! Well, I'll go cook you should rest up for now. I'll be right back!"

The porridge didn't take too long to cook and she prepared some tea and cold water since
she forgot to ask what kind of drink he wanted.
She grabbed a couple of bowls and filled them both with porridge. Afterwards, she took
a tray out of the cupboard and took a glass of cold water, a cup of tea and a bowl of porridge along
with a spoon to the room.

"Here's your food" She smiled, feeling satisfied about herself.
She walked out before he could even say anything and she took her bowl with her along with
a glass of water. She sat on the ground and took a spoonful.
"So, how do you like it?" She asked, a bit insecure about her cooking.
She wasn't really that good when it comes to the culinary arts; she is actually just
average at best.

He accepted the food with another smile, then started to eat. As soon as he did, he paused for a moment, then grinned a bit. "This is really good, actually. Maybe it's because my own cooking is horrible, but this is good. I....really have nothing to compare it against, but it's still good." He shrugged a bit. "Again, thank you Miss Kitamura." It seemed he was going to be rather polite and respectful. He wouldn't call her by anything else unless she told him it was alright. After all, she WAS helping him.

He continued to eat, and found he rather enjoyed the company. He was usually alone, aside from the damned sword, so any social interaction was welcome, even if they were just sitting and eating. Of course, he couldn't get it out of his head that Riiko was very beautiful, and, as he'd evaluated before, very much like an angel, both in looks and demeanor. Even her voice. He didn't believe he was lucky enough to meet someone like her.

In fact, he wasn't really convinced that she WASN'T an angel, and that he wasn't actually dead.

A Reason To Live
Riiko Kitamura

Rii let out a giggle.
"I'm glad you like it! Heehee!" Rii finished her porridge and waited on him, so she could
clean the dishes.

Rii licked her lower lip out of habit, making her lips look rosier than it already is
and asked "So where are you from?"
She couldn't help but notice that just about everything about him looked strange.
Different from the trends that's been going around recently anyway.

She has also noticed the sword and gave it a quick glance, but didn't ask anything
about it, seeing how protective he was of it earlier.

He finished eating, and sighed. "A relatively small village called Levitas. That's Latin for Lightning. It's a village full of mostly Lightning Elementals, if you know what those are. You probably do...anyway, that's where I'm from. I don't really know where it is in relation to this town....how far or what direction...I haven't been there in a very long time, since I left with this sword..." The way his eyes narrowed and his voice soured when he mentioned the sword spoke volumes about his feelings about it.

He hated that sword. Or to be more specific, the man whose spirit was sealed inside it, though after all this time, the man and the sword really counted as one thing. He hated them equally. He cut his eyes to Riiko, then away. He'd noticed her lick her lower lip earlier, but had not noticed the effect till now. His eyes had been rather drawn to her lips, so he'd had to look away. He really wasn't used to dealing with women. Especially not beautiful, young women.

A Reason To Live
Riiko Kitamura

Rii thought about the relation between the villages
and realized that it was way far away. almost across the country actually.

"That's a long way! Where do you plan on going?" Rii asked, still curious.
She noticed the bitterness in his voice when he mentioned the sword
and decided not to say anything about it... yet. Not until he's more comfortable
with her anyways. She doesn't really find it nice to pry into people's business
when they just met.

She stood up and grabbed the tray away from him and she noticed how
he had a piece of porridge at the side of his lip. She placed the tray on the floor
and took out a handkerchief out of the pouch she was wearing on her hips
and wiped it off for him.

"Sorry, you had a piece of porridge stuck there, it'd be silly to not
do anything about it." She smiled again and arranged the bowls and glass on the floor
while she listened to him speak.

A slight blush crept across his face when she wiped the porridge from his lip, but said nothing of it, instead answering her question. "I don't have a destination really. Just a goal. I'm trying to get rid of this sword. To destroy it or purify it. I have so far found nothing. I've travelled most of the world, actually. At least that I could find. Unfortunately, I've had no luck. I'm beginning to think I'll never succeed..." He lowered his gaze, brow furrowing a bit. "I don't want to break my promise..."
